January Question of the Month

The Question of the Month is a bloghop that occurs the first Monday of each month and it is hosted by Michael G D'Agostino from A Life Examined. Here is the question for January 2016:
What are some New Year’s resolutions you’ve had in the past?
I have not made many New Year’s resolutions for the past few years. I think it’s mainly because the words of my pastor come to mind. He often says that we should not vow to do something unless we plan to stick to it. When we make empty promises, it will only lead to disappointment. That being said, I still do use the New Year as an opportunity to rework my goals. In the past I have redone my budget, started new Bible studies, tried new healthy recipes, and started an exercise routine within the first two months of the year. I did resolve once in January and another year in July to read through my Bible in a year. I did not make it within the year-long deadline, but I did eventually finish both times. I think that goals can be made any time of year, but a New Year is a good time to wipe the slate clean. It’s like picking up an old book you only read halfway through, sometimes it is easier to just start over instead of trying to remember where you left off. If you have made resolutions this year, I hope you do well with keeping them. Don’t give up if you get off course for a few days, just dust yourself off and try again.
Happy New Year everyone! I will see you again Wednesday for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group post day.

  1. I like what your pastor said about resolutions and making them. That was wise advice! I rarely like when people make a goal to read the Bible through in a year; they usually get bogged down and behind in the reading plan and then stop reading. I like that you did finish reading it though took a bit longer than anticipated. I rather have people just make a commitment to read the Bible at least 10-15 minutes a day and if it takes longer than a year to get through it; at least they made it through :)

I haven't made resolutions in a few years either; I think its because its amazing how fast the time is going these days.

    1. Betty, I agree that time flies so fast and it is hard to keep up with regular routines, let alone trying to make changes and new goals. And it can be discouraging when you get behind with reading the Bible, committing to a set amount of time each day does sound like a better plan :)

  2. Reading the Bible start to finish is a good goal.
Only one who keeps His promises no matter what. The rest of us fail miserably.

    1. Very true Alex! If I can't get anything else done in a day, I hope I at least spend some time in God's word, because it should be my first priority.

  3. I don't make resolutions either. I agree with your pastor that you shouldn't make vows you can't keep. It's been a few years since I read the Bible from start to finish. It might be time to do that again.

    1. Susan, reading though the Bible can be a rewarding experience even if it does take longer than a year :)

  4. Here's to more evolving and less resolving. Happy 2016!

  5. I don't like to make empty promises. That's a good way to describe it.

    Love,

  6. It sounds like you're setting goals rather than making resolutions, which is probably better :)
