IWSG: Don't Quit

Time for another posting with the Insecure Writer’s Support Group, where writers can share their insecurities and encourage one another. IWSG was founded by Alex J. Cavanaugh and we share our posts the first Wednesday of the month. The IWSG poses a question for us to answer in our monthly posts. Here is the question for June:

Did you ever say “I quit”? If so, what happened to make you come back to writing?

This question is so relevant to my state of mind lately that it was hard to answer. In fact, I have been procrastinating this post. When I sat down to write it Sunday afternoon, I ended up joining Twitter. I have been avoiding Twitter like the plague, but I also knew that it may eventually be a useful tool to promote my writing. Since I was avoiding this post, Twitter all of a sudden had this unheard of appeal for me (that or I wanted some extra entries in a raffle contest). Look at me talking about Twitter like I understand it (I don’t!) and continuing to avoid the topic at hand.
I never officially threw in the towel with writing, but I certainly do procrastinate an awful lot. I go into cycles with my writing. First, I start building up momentum and the ideas are coming in faster than I can get them down on paper. Then, I am highly motivated and write constantly for one or two weeks straight. Then, I either hit a huge roadblock or I come to a conclusion with the story/post/section. After that I enter this state of “What do I do now?” or “How do I move forward from here?” and writing suddenly becomes this evil beast that glares at me through a white screen with a blinking cursor. That is when the procrastination begins, and suddenly, there is never enough time to write or my job is too overwhelming or I make other excuses. I never know how long this stage will last, but eventually, I will find my way back to the beginning of the cycle. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
In case you haven’t guessed already, I have been stuck in the procrastinating stage for a while. In fact, a couple weeks ago, I actually found myself asking, “Is it really worth it?” I keep questioning my ability to “moonlight” as a writer because it truly is hard to find balance. What’s funny is that the thing that made me come back this time was something I wrote about before. I was looking through my old posts to find one to use for Flashback Friday and I came across this post from my blogging comeback in 2015. I had quit blogging (not writing entirely) and that was my first post after a 15-month absence. Reading something I wrote during a high point, helps me remember the joy and inspiration that writing brings. In that post, I wrote about learning and seeking out the things that bring encouragement in my life. My suggestion to myself and anyone else who may be going through a writing slump is to learn new things, find your inspiration again, and don’t give up!

P.S. For anyone interested, you can now find me on Twitter @ElizabethAOtten (don’t forget the middle initial). I still have no idea what I’m doing there, so forgive me if I don’t follow proper etiquette or don’t tweet enough or commit other noob failures.

Flashback Friday: Breaking the Silence

**It's the last Friday of the month, so it's time for Flashback Friday! Participants repost an old post that needed more attention, that you're very proud of, that you think is still relevant, etc. It was hosted by Michael G D'Agostino, but he has opted out. You can still find a list of previous and current participants on his blog. The month of May sort of just vanished for me, and it seems my priorities have been shuffled around more often than not the last few months. I thought this post was an appropriate reminder for me. When I posted this, I had just come back after not posting for a year and a half. The blogging challenge I mentioned was the 2015 A to Z Challenge. I had no idea what I was getting into when I wrote this post, haha, but I'm glad that I got involved with the blogging community. Reading this again reminds me how much I enjoy writing (and learning) and I'm sorry for my blogging negligence lately. I know that I don't want to repeat a long term blogging absence, so I'm working on budgeting my time a little better. And now, the flashback post...**

Breaking the Silence (originally posted February 19, 2015)

It has been quite a long time since I last posted anything.  I feel as though time has been against me, but I haven’t really been busy, at least not busier than normal.  I guess I’ve been sort of stumped for writing ideas and I really haven’t felt like writing a lot lately.  I have not even been journaling as much as I used to.  My creative side does not want to allow this to keep happening, so I am beginning again.  It is about time I dust off this old “pen” and take it up again.  With a new year already well underway, almost 2 months in, to be precise, I have felt inspired to make my own resolutions.  There have been many inspirations over the last couple months prodding me back to writing.  I recently finished a Bible study in Colossians which helped renew my prayer journal.  I came across a Great Courses catalog last month and ended up ordering some courses, including a couple on writing.  I’ve watched 2 lectures from one course about the way we structure sentences, and it has been enjoyable so far.  I’ve felt inspired in other areas as well.  I have always been excited about learning new things, so getting these courses has been encouraging.  I have also been studying Mandarin Chinese with Rosetta Stone, which has been tough but interesting.  I have been reading fiction on a more regular basis again.  All of this has helped me to feel renewed, inspired, and ready for some positive new beginnings/changes in my life.

This may not sound interesting to you.  Maybe reading, writing, learning, and Chinese sound too boring or too difficult.  My point is this: do whatever it is that inspires you.  Seek out ways to renew your interest in life.  Seek God above all else, because He is the ultimate source of inspiration and redemption.  God doesn’t want us to mope about in a pity parties about the state of our lives, our economy, or our country.  We need to go out and make the most of the time that’s been given to us.

I hope to write more often.  In fact, I’m thinking about participating in a blog challenge and I will provide more details if I do decide to take part. I also hope to make a few changes and updates to this blog and those will come as time allows.  Until then, it has been nice to come back and I hope those of you who read this will enjoy whatever comes next :)

IWSG: Reading as a Writer

Time for another posting with the Insecure Writer’s Support Group, where writers can share their insecurities and encourage one another. IWSG was founded by Alex J. Cavanaugh and we share our posts the first Wednesday of the month. The IWSG poses a question for us to answer in our monthly posts. Here is the question for February:
How has being a writer changed your experience as a reader?
Even though time has escaped me more often than not in the last few years, I will always love reading. I was the 10-year-old who huddled up next to a night light, past my bedtime, in order to read “just one more chapter”. Since then, I could not tell you how many times I’ve used that same line in the middle of the night. When I find a good book, I like to escape in the simple pleasure of reading. I could almost turn this question around to ask: How has reading shaped my experience as a writer? Reading is part of my motivation because I would love to be able to write one of those books people can escape into. My insecurity also stems from that, because I feel incapable of writing such a book. One thing that I will say in answer to this month’s question is that I sometimes use reading as a tool. I went through a dry spell with reading for a couple years; I just could not find a book worth diving into. As I got more involved with blogging and writing fiction, I got back into reading again. Reading a variety of authors and genres is an excellent form of research. It is helpful to see how others write and the techniques they use. Recently, I have also found a new addiction in audiobooks. Listening to a book allows you to enter a story through a different sense and it is a convenient way to “read” while driving, which is sometimes the only time I get to myself. I was stuck on descriptive details when I was writing my fantasy story until I listened to The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks for a few minutes. Of course, I still enjoy the moments of quiet when I can just sit and read, and if writing inspiration comes, I welcome it gladly!

Question of the Month: Growing Up

The Question of the Month is a bloghop that was started by Michael G D'Agostino and it occurs the first Monday of each month. Here is the question for January:

What was your “growing up” moment?
For me, “growing up” was more of a series of moments rather than one particular time. It’s those moments when I reach a milestone and realize things may never be the same again. Driving alone for the first time, my first job at Subway, the first time I made a purchase over $100 with my own income, giving a speech at high school graduation, going to college and living in the dorms, going to Bible studies and church on my own, my first apartment and paying utility bills, graduating college and getting my teaching certificate, and those are just the moments that occurred around 10 or more years ago.
Then there are the moments like seeing teenagers at the mall and calling them “kids”, coming across multiple phrases that younger people use that I don’t recognize, realizing (as I’m writing this) that this year will be my 10-year college reunion, but I veer off course because these are moments that make me feel old, not grown up.
Honestly, I feel as though I still have a lot of “growing up” to do. There are many things I have not yet experienced, like getting married, having a baby, and buying a house, but I no longer believe those things make us adults. I know wives, parents, and homeowners who still feel as though they have no idea what they are doing. I think God uses all of our experiences in life to teach us and we never stop learning. Since learning is a part of growing and maturing, I feel as though there will always be room for more of these “growing up” moments.

Do you have a "growing up" moment? Do you ever have those moments of feeling "old"?

Regaining Energy

“In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.” Proverbs 16:9 (NIV1984)

That verse has so often applied to my life, especially this summer. I thought I had some great posts planned out and ready to be scheduled during the past few months, however, the summer turned out to be a lot busier than I thought it would outside of the blogging community. In the last eight to ten weeks, I have had two, maybe three, full 24-hour days spent at home. I have been constantly on the go to work, church activities, shopping trips, and outings with friends and family. In early August, I went to an amazing youth conference as a youth worker/leader, and I am really glad I decided to go. Besides my job, I do enjoy all these aforementioned activities, but my introverted self is in desperate need of some alone time to recharge my energy. Without being recharged, I feel strained socially, mentally, and emotionally. If you have come across me, whether in person or online, I apologize if I seemed cross or unpleasant; it may have been one of those completely drained moments.

An important part of the blogging experience is the community, and I enjoy reading comments and posts from my fellow bloggers. Even though it is a lot easier for me to interact with people in writing, I do still consider blogging a form of social engagement and it has been hard to get into an interactive mood lately. So, what have I been doing with those seemly few hours I have at home? Mostly, I’ve been doing a lot of soul-searching. I’ve been thinking about my personality and how it affects my choices and goals. I’ve been thinking about majors I should have picked in college, like psychology, neurology, or journalism. I’ve been thinking about my dreams and desires and wondering if some will ever be reached, like marriage. I’ve also spent a lot of time in prayer during this introspective process. I think God did use this socially-overwhelmed time to help me to spend my leftover time away from communicative activities and more into studying and learning by myself. I cannot say that this process is over, but I am ready to attempt to get back on a regular blog post schedule. I have been trying to get this particular post written for the last month, and here it finally is! The thing that has bothered me the most is all the work I put in to visit and meet new bloggers in April’s A to Z Challenge seems to have fallen apart during the summer. That is another area I should work on, consistency. Thanks to those of you who continue to bear with me! You are great friends!

Feeling a Little Crafty

This past weekend I attended a Women in the Outdoors (WITO) event. This was my third time to participate and as always, it was a lot of fun. The only downside is that something stirred up my allergies and sinuses and I am still trying to clear my head congestion :( So, with the weekend activities and the need to sleep more the rest of this week, I have gotten behind on comments again. One of these days I will get myself on a decent blogging/community schedule. I enjoy hearing from all of you (Facebook friends included). Just hang in there, I will return your visits, eventually :)

Without further ado, here are some pictures of the crafts I made at WITO. Yes, we pick the indoor crafting classes at an event that includes the word "outdoors," lol. Although, one class was outside under a canopy.

Cords on Gourds

Medicine Bag

Paint and Bake Tiles

As an added bonus, here are some of last year's crafts:

Antler Jewelry

Corn Husk Doll

Finger Weaving

*** Stay tuned next Wednesday for a special announcement! Does anyone want to guess what blogging milestone I'm reaching next week? ***

Weekend Coffee Share

If we were having coffee...

If we were having coffee together, first of all I would have to say that I've never tried this before, so I'm making up the format as I go :)  Secondly, this is the first time I've attempted to write and post from my phone, so we shall see how this goes.

You asked me why I'm posting from my phone?  Good question!  I am currently at a single ladies' retreat on an afternoon break and  my computer is 4 & 1/2 hours away!  I was wondering what I'd do with this time.  I could have taken a nap, but then I thought about you, my readers :)

This retreat has been amazing so far.  It is a blessing in and of itself just to be surrounded by women who are in the same state as I am, and I don't mean Texas, I mean the state of singleness.  It is a privilege to be able to hear from these women who understand what I'm going through.  There have been so many great points brought up, but so far there seems to be an overall theme being brought out through each speaker's words: Joy and contentment.  No matter where you are in life, you must learn to trust God and allow Him to be your fulfillment.  A spouse, children, career, or riches will not bring fulfillment, only Christ can fill whatever void you may have in your life.  Also, if you are a believer in Christ, you can experience joy.  Do you know the acronym for J.O.Y.? It's Jesus first, then others, then you.  If we follow God's will for our lives and think of others before we think of ourselves, we can experience joy!  Yes, it is hard to die to ourselves daily, but we are not alone.  God is our strength and our refuge; He will handle everything for us if we just hand it over to Him!  That's just a few of the things I've been reminded of this weekend.  I have heard these things before and I have probably written about some of it, but I still need a constant reminder.  I hope reminders in my life will be helpful to you as well.

"That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory." 1 Peter 1:7-8 (KJV)

Before you go, I would like to tell you more  about this single ladies' retreat.  It is hosted by Biblical Discipleship Ministries and this is the second one they have done.
Dr. Jobe Martin has a lot if great material on creationism and since his two daughters are both single and in their 30s, they have had many opportunities for ministry with young women and singles.  I highly recommend looking at their site linked above and books if you have an interest in science and creation.

A Little About Me

A few years ago, a note was going around on facebook titled: “25 Random Things About Me.”  Many of my friends typed up 25 things that people may not know about them.  Just for fun, I decided to use that again, but I’ll change some of them this time.  I decided to include things some people don’t know, things God is working on in my life, and just a few random, quirky facts.  I hope you enjoy :)

1.      I was born in Mesa, Arizona and I spent my childhood there.

2.      My mom enrolled me in a private Christian school at age 5 and I didn’t pass the test to get into kindergarten, so they put me in Pre-K.

3.      After attending two different private schools for Pre-K and kindergarten, I was homeschooled for 1st through 3rd grade.

4.      The last time I posted the 25 things, I said I had never flown in a plane, and that is no longer true.

5.      I could easily name off at least 5 new ideas for blog posts, but the problem is that I never put in the time to truly go in depth on those ideas.

6.      In the 6th grade I was “seriously” considering a career as an actress.

7.      In kindergarten, when asked what I want to be when I grow up, I said “a mommy.”

8.      I have been to all of the southernmost states, except for Louisiana.

9.      I love to travel and see new places.

10.  I find many hobbies and occupations interesting and I have trouble committing myself to learning just one, or at least one at a time.

11.  Although I have taken breaks away from books, I still always love reading and will readily escape into any good book that comes my way.

12.  Speaking of books, I am seriously considering writing one. I even have a topic picked out with 5 pages of brainstorming.

13.  God has been teaching me the importance of finding contentment in my life. Many of my past blog posts would show how I’ve been challenged in that area.

14.  I like things to be neat and organized, although my desk and closet would prove otherwise.

15.  Ester and Ruth from the Bible are my role models.

16.  I want to live my life like the Proverbs 31 woman.

17.  At the age of 29, I still feel like I’m going through a quarter-life crisis, but I trust that God will show me where He wants to take my life.

18.  I may be quiet, but I do enjoy the company and fellowship of friends.

19.  According to Gary Chapman’s love languages book, my love language is quality time.

20.  My favorite radio station is Classical 88.7. I find classical music to be so beautiful and inspiring.

21.  I also like many Christian songs and hymns, and a few too many songs from musicals.

22.  If asked, I never can come up with my favorite movie, song, restaurant, book, etc., but I would be happy to list 10 of my favorites in no particular order.

23.  I can’t even narrow down to one favorite verse, although there are some that have stuck out the last few years: Prov. 3:5-6, Jer. 29:11, and Isa. 41:10.

24.  Even though I force myself to go to sleep a little earlier than I used to (some nights) and sometimes I actually fall asleep early out of pure exhaustion, I think I will still always be a night owl.

25.  The past couple of months, I have heard a lot of good, convicting preaching at camps and teaching from the retreat this past weekend. God has shown me that I must fully surrender my life to Him.  I am working on this one day at a time and striving to commit each day to Him.
